The word Ashiatsu combines the Japanese words for foot (ashi) and pressure (atsu). Ashiatsu is a massage technique utilizing the feet to apply controlled pressure to client' bodies. The massage therapist holds onto bars attached to the ceiling for balance and control, and uses compressive and gliding movements with their feet to relieve work the body. As the massage therapist is able to utilize the full broad area of the foot as a tool and sink in with the full weight of their body, they can address deep muscle tension more comfortably than might be achieved with deep forearm or elbow compression.
